After over a decade of working on residential and listed building projects at larger practices in London, I wanted to use my skills to start a service that is more accessible to homeowners and small businesses.
There are increasing discussions about retrofitting homes and the drive to use clean energy, but it's less clear what it actually means. I wanted to demystify this.
People talk about retrofitting homes, but they are essentially a building project and need the eye of a trained building professional such as an architect. For example, it can range from a simple window replacement to a large kitchen extension.
Rather than a standard bolt-on upgrade to the house, a good retrofit looks at context, climate, occupants and the whole house as a system tuned to work most efficiently — not just individual parts bolted on to make a difference.
That is the reason I started Bura Studio. The best home refurbishments are guided by evidence, not assumptions. We combine building performance data with thoughtful architectural design to help you create a home that's beautiful, comfortable, low-energy, and built to last.
How we work
Every project starts the same way — a proper conversation, on-site if possible, about what you actually want, not just what you think you're allowed to ask for. From there, expect sketches you can actually picture your home in, not just technical drawings; honest planning-risk advice before you fall in love with a design that won't get approved; and one point of contact throughout, because you shouldn't have to manage three different people to get one project built.
A bit of honesty
We take the work seriously — PI insured, ARB and RIBA registered, PAS 2035 accredited, all the boxes properly ticked. We don't take ourselves too seriously. If you want a firm that talks in jargon and keeps you at arm's length, we're probably not it.
